Charles Sailey, MD, MS, FCAP, FASCP
Chief Scientific Officer and Medical Director of Laboratories
Dr. Charles Sailey obtained dual graduate degrees in Cell Biology and Biotechnology before medical training. After earning a medical degree, he completed residency training in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology at the University of Maryland, followed by fellowship training in Molecular Genetic Pathology at the University of North Carolina. He is a board-certified clinical and molecular genetic pathologist and holds medical licenses in several states as well as a certificate of qualification for testing from the state of New York. As medical and scientific director of the Molecular Genetic Pathology, Molecular Microbiology, Metabolic Genetics, and Clinical Chemistry laboratories at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, he planned, designed, and coordinated the construction of a human genetics laboratory in 2011.
As Chief Scientific Officer and Medical Director of Laboratories at Molecular Testing Labs, he is responsible for monitoring all scientific and technical processes that occur within the laboratory. These duties include designing, monitoring, and approving test validations; ensuring compliance with CAP and CLIA regulations; writing, editing, and approving SOPs; monitoring technician competencies; reviewing daily, monthly, and annual quality controls; monitoring and reviewing proficiency testing; monitoring budgets and allocating resources as needed; and reviewing all test results and ensuring interpretations are within current guidelines and up-to-date with the most recent medical guidelines.
Dr. Sailey is currently the primary investigator for several ongoing research projects, including analysis of various collection methods for community and individual-based testing of sexually transmitted infections and several FDA 510(k) submissions for various tests. He has helped to expand all departments and validated new testing methods including testing sexually transmitted infections from dried blood spots and expanding the research department for internal and external projects. Dr. Sailey has over 60 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and presentations at both national and international conferences. He has been a professor at several universities. Dr. Sailey has held the title of College of American Pathologists Delegate Chair for the state of Oregon for three years and performed over 20 laboratory audits.
