Our team of world-class clinicians, research scientists, and technologists is driven by a shared passion for helping everyone access diagnostic care, as well as the scientific advancements that improve that access.
Adam Blackwell
Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer
Adam holds a BS in Nuclear Engineering Technology and a BA in Business Administration. With a decade of experience as a Nuclear Submariner in the US Navy and 13 years in the semiconductor industry, he has a strong foundation in technical and scientific fields. Adam’s expertise and passion extend to laboratory testing, contributing to him co-founding Molecular Testing Labs.
Charles Sailey, MD, MS, FCAP, FASCP
Chief Scientific Officer and Medical Director of Laboratories
Dr. Sailey is a board-certified clinical and molecular genetic pathologist with dual graduate degrees in Cell Biology and Biotechnology. He completed his residency in Anatomic & Clinical Pathology and a fellowship in Molecular Genetic Pathology. Dr. Sailey oversees scientific processes at Molecular Testing Labs, ensuring compliance with CAP and CLIA regulations.
Barbara Zehentner, PhD, MBA, HCLD (ABB)
Chief Operating Officer
Dr. Zehentner has over 25 years of experience in precision laboratory diagnostics. She holds a PhD in Molecular Biology and an MBA, and is certified as a high-complexity clinical laboratory director. Dr. Zehentner has led clinical laboratory operations, developing and implementing advanced diagnostic technologies and therapeutic discoveries to improve patient care.
Mariko Nakano, PhD
Advanced Research Principal Investigator
Dr. Nakano holds a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Washington and has a diverse background in research and development across the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors. At Molecular Testing Labs, she specializes in developing diagnostic and wellness test assays, with a focus on advancing innovative user-initiated specimen collection methods.
Kelly Chauvin, PharmD
Medical Science Liaison and Certifying Scientist
Dr. Chauvin holds a Doctor of Pharmacy and a BS in Biochemistry. She has worked as a registered pharmacist in various settings, including rural, compounding, hospital, and academia. With over 10 years’ experience as a Medical Science Liaison for Molecular Testing Labs, she is passionate about educating healthcare providers on novel diagnostics and promoting the clinical use of precision medicine.
Ashley Lucas, MS
Manager of Operational Excellence and Project Management Office
Ashley holds a Master's in Neurobiology and Behavior and is a Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt. She has over a decade of experience, specializing in project management, quality improvement, and strategic leadership. At Molecular Testing Labs, Ashley leads a diverse team, driving initiatives like new product development, complex client onboarding, and process optimization through data-driven methodologies.
Kavinda De Silva, BSc
Senior Manager of Laboratories and Principal Investigator
Kavinda is a seasoned toxicology expert with over 15 years of experience. He holds a BS in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Washington, and excels in managing high-paced, deadline-driven environments with clarity and accuracy. His extensive laboratory operations experience includes proficiency in various analytical instruments and a strong interest in learning and maintaining new technologies and automation. His expertise ensures efficient laboratory processes and high-quality results in clinical diagnostics.
Heather Pyles, MBA, BA
Molecular Genetics Lab Manager
Heather holds a BA in Biology and an MA in Business Administration. Prior to joining MTL in 2023, Heather spent 15+ years in the field of Forensic Science performing DNA testing and designing and validating new testing workflows. Heather also brings with her experience in ISO accreditation, laboratory management, and leading successful teams. Heather currently oversees MTL’s molecular testing assays and the Clinical Laboratory Development program.
Jack Kidney, BA
Infectious Disease Lab Manager
Jack Kidney has a BA in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and 15 years of laboratory experience performing and supporting infectious disease testing.
Charity Hicks, BS
Certifying and Reporting Manager
Charity has a background in Biochemistry and Toxicology. At MTL, Charity’s team works cross-functionally to certify data and reports for all departments, empowering clients with access to high-quality lab diagnostics.
Zane Hauck, PhD
Senior Manager of Product Development
Dr. Hauck has over six years of experience in developing and validating methods for alternative sample types. He holds a PhD in Pharmacognosy. At Molecular Testing Labs, Dr. Hauck is responsible for ensuring all new assays are validated following appropriate criteria and implementation of the new assays into the production environment.
Frances Morris, MS
Research & Development Manager
Frances has a MS in Analytical Chemistry. She has over six years of experience working in regulatory labs following GLP, CAP, and CLIA guidelines from assay development and validation through production.
